History
Five historical mills lie in the Lengeltal valley near Frankenau in north Hesse: the Oberste Mill, the Huhns Mill, the Kuchen Mill, the Lengel Mill with the Lengelhof farm and the Bären Mill. The mills were in operation for over 800 years grinding grain to flour and pressing oil.
The first milling families that worked the mills were real Hesse aristocracy – the squires von Drach whose seat was in Ellershausen. Later the millers leased the mill buildings for some years from the estate owners. But they were hardly any better off than before as they were still dependant on the well-meaning of the landlords for their living. The lease was turned into a so-called hereditary lease at the start of the 19th century. It enabled the families to gradually pay off the sum needed to buy the land outright.
In the meantime all the Lengeltal mills are under preservation orders, the valley itself has been declared a nature reserve.
The Bärenmühle was officially mentioned for the first time in the 16th century. It has had its present appearance since 1850.
The owners, three sisters, grew up in the mill. All three left their parent’s home and were spread all over the world – they lived in Rome, New York and in other places. Then came the common decision to restore the Bärenmühle a few years ago. Bettina Kohl, who had worked in New York as a designer and event manager, returned to Lengeltal and took over the management of the mill business. A unique place to retreat for those seeking relaxation was therefore created in keeping with all rules of a sensible building biology and in adherence with preservation regulations. The historical ambience has been retained, at the same time a great deal of importance was placed however on modern comfort when furnishing the nine suites and holiday flats. The Bärenmühle kitchen serves culinary delicacies prepared using regional products - for example from the cousin’s organic farm. Time can be forgotten in the guests’ library engrossed in a good book and with the crackling of the log fire in the background. Those not yet relaxed can enjoy one of the exquisite health spa treatments or a refreshing dip in the bathing lake in front of the house.
