History
A Brief History
The first known origins of Boetzelaer Castle date back to the 12 th century. In those times, the van den Boetzelear family succeeded in accumulating extensive estates. Built on three islands in an arm of the Rhine, the knight's castle is one of the biggest in the Lower Rhine . It was of enormous importance for the family's independent position both symbolically and as a political power base. The family split up into two branches in the 15 th century. One settled in the Netherlands , where their descendants still live.
After the male Kleve family line died out during the 17 th century, the castle fell into the ownership of the Counts von Wylich, before belonging to the Hertefeld family in the 18 th century. The castle was then acquired by the Gülcher family at the start of the 19 th century. Demolition reduced the castle to its present scale. Since 1950, only the front castle building has been used for residential purposes whilst the castle proper gradually became more and more dilapidated.
Extensive restoration - assisted by castle historians and archaeologists - only began in 1978 upon the initiative of Baron Maximilian von Wendt which consequently resulted in the founding of the Burg Boetzelaer Society . The castle was then partially rebuilt and made accessible. Rebuilding was carried out in keeping with the original substance and the main structure has been made safe using additional modern architectural elements. In recognition of the successful restoration, the castle's owner was awarded the so-called -Stiftungspreis- by the Deutschen Burgenvereinigung - a society for the preservation of German castles - in 2003.
