History

Gaussig has been a manor since 1245 and over the years has had several owners.

The present house was built in baroque style around 1700 by the owner of the day Rudolph von Neitschütz and his wife. Ursula was the mistress of Saxony's Electoral Prince Johann Georg III; similarly, her daughter was the first official mistress of Johann Georg IV, the brother of August the Strong.

From 1747 to 1750 the new owner Heinrich Count of Brühl had a baroque garden built from plans drawn up by the Chief State Architect Johann Christoph Knöffel; the garden's circular pavilion and the canal still exist today.

From 1750 to 1766 the house was owned by Hermann Carl Count of Keyserlingk, the Russian envoy at the Saxon Court and one of the patrons of the composer and harpsichordist Goldberg who lent his name to the famous Goldberg Variations, which were often played in the house.

Around 1800 the park, which was commissioned by Henriette Countess of Schall-Riaucour with the assistance of Chief State Architect Christian Friedrich Schuricht and a certain Lord Findlater, took on the landscaped shape which has been preserved to this day. The house was converted by Schuricht to Palladian Classicism, with plaster ashlar on the projections, lions' heads and drapes in the curved arches etc. In this era the entrance area (vestibule with Ionian columns), the Garden Room, with herms as bearers of the cornice pieces over the side doors, was also redesigned.

The cemetery was built in 1880 and the chapel was built in 1894.

In 1907 the library was added to the south side and several rooms were redesigned. Saxony's last king Friedrich August III spent almost every year at Gaussig to go deer-hunting.

In 1945 the house was confiscated form the owners of the day and then used by the Soviet Red Army and later the CDU political party. From 1950 to 1992 the Technical University of Dresden looked after the park and used the castle as a club for its professors and as a conference centre.

In 2005 Estate Gaussig became the property of the family of Andreas Count of Brühl-Pohl. The house was carefully renovated and restored over a three year period in order to give its guests an authentic backdrop to their stay.
