History
A Brief History
The oldest historical record of Schloss Wissen dates back to 1372. Back then Count Adolf von Kleve drew up a charter of protection for the parish of Weeze and the -House of Heinrick van der Straeten of Wissen-. The pre-castle building was also mentioned along with the main castle, which leads to the supposition that the castle is actually much older. The castle was given to the van der Straeten family by Stift Xanten as a fiefdom. After the family died out almost 100 years later, the castle was acquired by the knight Johann van den Loe as a dowry for his son Wessel. The latter married Lyssbeth van Beerenbroek, who stemmed from an important Lower Rhine family. In 1497 the Duke of Kleve raised Wissen into an own feudal lordship, which was connected with the privilege of a -lower- legal jurisdiction. Evidence of this is the still existing dungeon in the -Dicken Turm- - Thick Tower-- pre-castle building. Wessel's grandson Franz van den Loe had the castle redesigned in a residency-like style and adorned it with many little towers and oriels. The castle's next fundamental rebuilding stage followed two centuries later: towards the end of the 18 th century and before Napoleon annexed the Lower Rhine, Baron Franz Karl zu Loe, had the main castle building adapted to the French architectural style. Virtually all the towers and oriels were demolished and the brick castle received a white plaster façade and a mansard roof. Even parts of the -Dicke Turm- were extensively demolished. One century later, Count Graf Max von Loe allowed Schloss Wissen to be completely rearranged in neo-gothic. The tower was given back its original shape, the main castle received two neo-gothic stepped gables as well as some small towers and oriels.
The castle survived the Second World War virtually undamaged. However, the roof suffered some damage after being penetrated by dampness. It left Schloss Wissen uninhabitable for many years until the owning family extensively renovated it between 1969 and 1973. The magnificent halls followed in the eighties. As a part of the -Culture & Castles- project, the owners have renovated the outbuildings and have furnished stylish apartments for paying guests, which can be booked from summer 2005 onwards.
